Side 1 of Franko’s Guide Map of Guam - This map is of the whole island of Guam.  The island is shown in fabulous chartreuse shaded relief so the viewer can see the island topography as it stands out like a beautiful emerald on descending hues of ocean blues, which represent the true depth contours of the surrounding North Pacific Ocean.  Every hill and valley and the streams that flow out of the mountains to become Guam’s numerous rivers can be visualized clearly.  It is interesting that the United Stated Geological Service produces digital data, which can be translated into this beautiful shaded relief by a very sophisticated computer program called Arcview.  The software is expensive, but the Guam data cost all of $4.62!  Thanks to this data, this map is visually amazing and accurate.  The contents are just as amazing, largely thanks to the inventor of Guam tourism himself, Mr. Bert Unpingco.  Bert knows everything about Guam, and he knows everyone who could help on this map’s production - and they did.  Side 1 of Franko’s Guide Map of Guam, U.S.A. has much on it, but side 2 is just as filled.  Here is what you’ll find on side 1 alone:

The War In The Pacific National Historical Park must be detailed, because of its extreme importance on Guam, and so it is.  These sites are described and located on the map:

WAR IN THE PACIFIC NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK

This U.S. National Park consists of seven separate units and was created "to commemorate the bravery and sacrifices of those participating in the campaigns of the Pacific Theater of World War II, and to conserve and interpret outstanding natural, scenic, and historical values and objects on the island of Guam."  Seven Historical Park Units Include:

ASAN BEACH UNIT - Site of the northern landing beach where the U.S. 3rd Marine Division landed on July 21, 1944.  Site has guns, caves, pill boxes, and 445 acres of reefs and underwater relics.

ASAN INLAND UNIT - On the face of these cliffs Americans met with Japanese resistance in 1944.  Featured is the Asan Bay Overlook Memorial Wall in honor of Chamorros and Americans who died during the Battle for Guam.  Jungle hides caves, pillboxes, bridge, foxholes and a 75 mm mountain gun.

PITI GUNS UNIT - A 1/4 mile trail through dense growth leads to three Japanese coastal defense guns.

MOUNT CHACHAO/MOUNT TENJO UNIT - Site of southern landing beach where U.S. Marines and Army troops joined to push the Japanese to the northern side of the island.  Beautiful views for hikers.

AGAT UNIT - Site of southern landing beach where the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade followed by the 305th Regimental Combat Team and the 77th Army Infantry stormed the shores on July 21, 1944.  Underwater features relics and beautiful reefs.

MT. ALIFAN UNIT - This undeveloped unit is the former site of a Japanese command post during World War II.

FONTE PLATEAU UNIT - This undeveloped unit is the former Japanese naval communication center.

Dive sites:

Numerous sites and things to see and do are spread throughout the map.  Most notably there are the dive sites.  The following scuba and snorkeling sites found around the island are on side 1 of the map (there are even more than this described on side 2 of the Guam map:

SHARKS PIT  20'-130'+ (6-40m+)  Beginner - Advanced.   Former Navy dumping ground for bottles, anchors, jeeps, landing craft, munitions, and even cafeteria trays.  Sharks are very rare.  Huge boulder covered by sea fans at only 40' depth. 

BOULDER ALLEY 20' - 130'+ (6-40m+) Beginner - Advanced.  Moray eels and grazing green sea turtles.  Caution:  Western side is steep and very deep.

HAP'S REEF (UNDERWATER ZOO)  30'-60' (9-18m)  Beginner.  Easy dive at big reef that raises 30' (9m) off sand flats bottom.  Huge anemones with clownfish.  Wide variety of fish and invertebrates.

AMTRAK & CEMETERY WALL  30'-90' (9-27m)  Beginner.  Enter near Agat Cemetery and head straight out to Amtrak - a WWII amphibious personnel carrier.  Walls to the left or right with reef flats on top at 30' (9m).

ANE CAVERNS  15'-30' (5-9m)  Beginner.   Easy cavern diving.  Green sea turtles, sleepy whitetip reef sharks and lots of fish.  Bring a torch (flashlight).  Good snorkeling.

CORAL GARDENS  5'-50' (2-15m)  Beginner.   Boat dive for scuba or snorkeling.  South  side of AnE Island is a great shallow reef full of colorful corals, and is very photogenic.

PETE'S REEF  5'-80' (2-24m)  Beginner.  Boat dive for scuba or snorkeling to sandy area with reef pinnacles, large anemones and clownfish.  Lobsters & big crabs found on night dives.

BLACK CORAL KINGDOM  100'-200'+ (30-60m+)  Advanced.  Technical dive on deep reef off Facpi Pt. to see black corals at 150'+ (45m+).  Large pelagics.  Caution:  Deep with strong currents.

NATHAN'S DENT  30'-80' (9-24m)  Beginner.  Coral buttresses with mini caves rise out of sand flats.  "The Dent" is a V-shaped cut into the reef.  Look for lionfish and sharks.

TWIN DROP-OFF  50'-130'+ (15-40m+) Beginner-Advanced.  Boat dive just outside of Nathan's Dent to upper reef at 55' (17m), leading to drop-off and deeper reef.  Sea fans, seawhips and rays.

SEA FAN WALL  90'-200'+ (27-60+m) Advanced.   Reef begins at 90' (27m) and slopes to a point at 135' (41m), then drops off to 200'+ on three sides.  Sea fans abound on the sides of the drop-offs.  Also find black corals and sea whips.  Caution:  Strong currents may cause a drift on this deep, technical dive. SELLA BAY & CETTI BAY  To 50'  Beginner.  Beach diving & snorkeling amongst tons of sealife in shallow waters.

FU’A REEF  To 40' (12m)  Beginner.  Boat dive for scuba or snorkeling  to coral pinnacles full of mini caves, crevices and swim-throughs.  Puffers and lionfish.

 Bring torch.

JAPANESE ZERO  50' (15m) Beginner.   Just offshore from Fort San Jose is Mitsubishi A6M5 Japanese Zero from WWII.

BILE BAY  To 60' (18m)  Beginner.  Boat or beach dive for scuba or snorkeling.  "Bile" is pronounced "Billy". Enter from Merizo Park off Hwy. 4.  The reef is like a peninsula that slopes down on three sides to 60' (18m).  See spinner dolphins and manta rays.  Good night dive.

COCOS LAGOON  To 30' (9m)  Beginner.   Many places to snorkel or scuba dive within huge lagoon.  Beach snorkeling from Cocos Island.  Watch out for boats, jetskis, etc.     

SEA WHIP JUNCTION & COCOS WALL  30'-130'+ (9-40m+) Intermediate - Advanced.  Boat dive.  Cocos Wall is a deep drift dive, Sea Whip Junction is a recess within the Cocos Wall.  Bottom topography descends in steps from 30' (9m) to 110' (33m), then drops straight down to 200'+ (60m+).

MANA BAY CUT  To 80' Intermediate. - Advanced.  Beach dive just offshore of Ipan Beach Resort.  Dive only when calm.  Soft coral gardens, poisonous stone fish,

angelfishes and anemones with clownfish.

NAPOLEON CUT 25'-100' (8-36m)  Advanced.  Boat dive.  Sometimes a drift dive at cut extending thru reef.  Reef full of fishes, turtles, sharks, large

pelagic species, and colorful invertebrates in sand flats.

NORTHERN CAVES  20'-60' (6-18m) Advanced Cave Diving.  Boat dive to cave passage goes inland into clear fresh water spring.  Swim past stalagtites and stalagmites to a pool in the jungle.  Caution:  Experienced cave divers only.

DOUBLE REEF  To 60' (18m)  Beginner.  Boat dive to colorful corals filled with small invertebrates and all kinds of reef fishes.  Big anemones have clownfish.

Sandy area has garden eels.  Excellent diving in shallows just beyond wave zone.

THE PINNACLE  120'+  (36m+)  Advanced.  Boat dive to deep sea mount 150' wide x 500' long (47x150m).  Large pelagics patrol the deep, including sharks.  Black corals in the deep zone.  Caution:  Deep, steep, prevalent strong currents.

ARATAMA MARU  To 50'  Intermediate - Advanced.  Boat dive to 6783 ton Japanese ammunition ship, sunk by the U.S. submarine Seahorse Apr. 8, 1944.  Visibility usually poor except during dry season.

BLUE AND WHITE  20' - 90' (6-27m)  Beginner - Advanced.  Boat dive to sand patch which starts shallow and descends to 80'+, where there are garden eels in sand.  Big Pelagics at reef edge.  Caution:  Area exposed to swells.

 

Guams highways and towns are all superbly mapped out for finding your way around this island, which is just over 30 miles in length and varies from about 4 to 9 miles across, depending on how you measure it.  The major towns shown are Agana (Hagatna, in the native Chamorro), Tamuning, Tumon Dededo, Yigo, Barrigada, Maite, Mong Mong, Toto, Agana Heights, Sinajana, Ordot, Asan, Piti,Tiyan (A.B. Wonpat International Airport area), Chalan Pago, Mangilao (University of Guam site), Yona, Talofofo, Inarajan, Merizo, Umatac, Agat, and Santa Rita. 

 

Guam rivers, streams, bodies of water and waterfalls are shown in accurate detail.  Favorite spots to visit are also shown with detailed descriptions.  They include:

 

Pauliluc Bay  Nice bay for fishing and swimming.  Hike north to Talofofo Bay (6 mi./10 km.), but only when Pacific Ocean is calm.

Achang Reef Flat Preserve  Extensive seagrass beds serve as natural fish nursery.

Ija Scenic Vista  Great views and trailhead for hike to Mt. Sasalaguan.

Gef Pa'Go Chamorro culture and traditions on display.  Crafts shops and Chamorro performances.

Jeff's Pirate's Cove & Seaside Museum  Open air restaurant, crafts for sale.  Was World War II U.S. Navy pilot rehab camp.  Museum has war artifacts and area history.

Tumon Bay Marine Preserve  No taking of shells or other marine life.  Trolling

outside reef line for pelagic species only.

SELLA BAY  Hiking, sightseeing & camping on beach between Sella & Cetti Bays.  Scuba and snorkeling.  Beware of large monitor lizards.

CETTI BAY Superb and scenic  kayaking on open water.  Boat-accessible diving & snorkeling.

Tarzan Falls  Freshwater snorkeling after hiking trail to waterfall.  Small waterfalls to sit in just downstream. Guamanian name for foreign hikers to remote places like this is "Boonie Stompers".

South Pacific Memorial Park, Site of one of the bloodiest battles at end of World War II.  Site memorializes 1/2 million lives lost in Pacific War from 1941 to 1945.  Tower represents hands praying for eternal peace.

Mt. Santa Rosa  Extinct volcano surrounded by elevated petrified coral. Spectacular views clear to island of Rota.

MT. HUMUYONG MANGLO  World's highest mountain, as measured from the bottom of the Marianas Trench, the deepest point in any ocean,  35,827ft.  (10,920m) deep.

Memorias Park Dedicated to the Guamanians who died in Vietnam.

Cocos Island  100-acre island resort in clear lagoon.  Glass bottom boat, jetskiing, windsurfing,  snorkeling, nice beaches, fishing, and good food.

Talofofo Falls  Favorite hike to swimming hole at base of falls. Replica of Yokoi's Cave.  Accessible by automobile.

Yokoi's Cave  In 1944 American military forces invaded Guam.  Sgt. Shoichi Yokoi, a loyal Japanese soldier hid in a man-made cave in the Talofofo jungle until 1972, when local farmers discovered him.  The Guam Museum displays his survival tools.  This is a replica cave as the real one has since collapsed.

Inarajan Garden House  Rustic tropical resort with beach access.

Inarajan Village  Spanish-style village dating to 1680. 

Talofofo River Jungle Riverboat Cruise  Scenic tour of Talofofo and Ugam Rivers goes to Talofofo Village, site of Chamorro hut and latte stones.  Chamorro cultural activities.

First Beach  Also called Asquiroga Cove or Devil's Cove, this is a nice swim and snorkel spot.  Hike (beach walk) 3.6 mi (5.8 km.) north to Ylig Bay.

Ipan Beach Park  Shaded by ironwood trees.  Swimming, snorkeling and kayaking.

Taga'Chang Beach Park  Pavilion, picnic tables and restrooms available.  Great snorkeling, but only when calm.  Ancient Chamorro settlement was located here. Great beach combing.

Andersen Air Force Base Largest Air Force Base in the Pacific.  Andersen continues to actively secure the Pacific region.  Base recreation facilities are exclusively for the U.S. Military community.

Fu'a Rock  Legend is that touching this "Rock of Creation"  cures male impotence for life, and enhances female desire and fertility.

There are also a handful of scenic photos of Guam on this side of Franko’s Guide Map of Guam.  Invasion Beach at Asan Bay, Piti Guns and Flags of Friendship (U.S., Japanese and Guam flags together) represent War In The Pacific National Park.

The Blue Hole, Guam’s number one scuba dive site is shown, as is Talofofo Falls and Fu’a Rock and Umatac Bay.  Fu’a Rock is Guam’s legendary Rock of Creation.  If a visitor to Guam makes the effort to Trek down to Fu’a Bay, and go out by the tide pools to this huge rock, which most will agree looks rather phalic, and then touch the rock, it is said that this will cure impotence for life for men and will enhance fertility and desire for women.  Maybe a trip to Guam is worth just doing this. 

Tropical Fishes of Guam and Magnificent Micronesia: At first glance at Franko’s Guide Map of Guam, the eye is drawn to the lower left corner, when Franko has depicted over 7 dozen creatures of Guam’s plentiful reefs.  These colorful tropical fishes await Guam’s visitors when they put on a mask and snorkel and venture into the waters.  Of course, there are glass bottom boats, submarine tours, and the Piti Marine Preserve’s Fisheye Marine Park underwater observatory as well.  But your visit to Guam would not be complete without viewing some of these beautiful reef  creatures.

 

Wildlife of Guam: Guam is much more noted for its tropical reef life, but in the upper corner of the map are featured a few of Guam’s wildlife, including the notable birds, such as the Guam Rail (Ko’Ko in Chamorro), and the colorful Marian Fruit Dove, plus Guam’s big fox bat, called the Mariana Fruit Bat.  The amusing and huge Coconut Crab is also shown.  This guy can tear into a whole coconut!

 

Side 2 of Franko’s Guide Map of Guam: This side of the map includes two zoom ins - Tumon Bay (the Hotel row area), and the area from Apra Harbor (lots of wrecks to scuba dive on) to Tumon Bay, which includes the scenic and historical capital of Agana (Hagatna in Chamorro).  Side 2 also features a map of all of Magnificent Micronesia.  The Micronesia map is surrounded by nine mini maps of Micronesia’s most prominent islands.  They include Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan, Tinian and Rota), Chuuk (Truk) Islands, Pohnpei Islands, Majuro and Arno Atolls of the Marshal Islands, Kosre, Yap Islands and Palau Islands.  Pertinent visitors bureaus numbers are shown.  They include:

The most outstanding feature on this map detail are the numberous scuba diving and snorkeling sites, which prove that Guam is a world-class dive destination.  Here are the dive sites listed on this side of the map:

BULDOZER & MYSTERY VESSEL  35'-135' (11-41m)  Advanced.  Boat or beach dive accessible via the Seabee Junkyard, due east at 100' (30m) depth.  Vessel sits upright and intact, but no one knows whose it was or when it sank.  Bulldozer sits upright 100' (30m) east of vessel.

SEABEE JUNKYARD  30'-130'  (9 - 40m)  Beginner-Advanced.  Boat or beach dive to WWII equipment dumping ground.  Bulldozers, pipes, small boat, and equipment covered with sea life.  Wreckage and sea life may be viewed via surface snorkeling.  Caution:  Poor area to park due to car burglaries.

AMERICAN TANKER  50'-100' (15-30m) Beginner-Advanced.  Boat or beach dive.  This WWII concrete barge was scuttled to make a breakwater.  Bring a light to see into dark holds.

THE VAL (VAL BOMBER)  25'-100' (6-30m)  Beginner.  Boat or beach dive to Japanese  warplane sitting on sloping reef just beyond first visible wrecked barge of breakwater.

KITSUGAWA MARU  65'-120'+ (20-36m+)  Advanced.  Boat dive on WWII Japanese freighter damaged and brought to Guam, then sunk by torpedo during "Marianas Turkeyshoot".  The "Kitz" sits upright. Encrusted bow gun and ammo sit on upper superstructure.  Wreck interior is accessible.

SALVAGE TUG  90'-130' (27-40m)  Advanced.  Boat dive/WWII Japanese tug sunk by torpedo hitting stern sits upright.  Ocean liner dropped its anchor on her in 1997.

TOKAI MARU 42'-130' (13-40m)  Beginner-Advanced.  WWII Japanese shipwreck lies on its starboard side touching WWI Russian shipwreck, the SMS Cormoran.  Sunk by U.S. submarines.  Bow is upslope.  Look for torpedo and strafing damage on bow and 4th hold.

SMS CORMORAN  80-120' (24-36m)  Advanced.  WWI Russian ship, taken by the Germans in WWI, and then scuttled rather than surrendering to the Americans.

WESTERN SHOALS  To 75' (23m)  Beginner.  Boat dive was formerly a top Apra Harbor dive spot, but typhoons damaged the reef.  Staghorn corals on top of reef.

BARGE REEF  45'-80' (14-24m)  Beginner.  Boat Dive on WWII Barge sitting upright on reef.  Hosts multitude of reef fishes and invertebrates.

HOURGLASS REEF  40'-100' (12-30m)  Beginner-Advanced.  Boat dive on hourglass-shaped reef.  Used as alternate site by Atlantis submarine.  Lots of corals and colorful sponges.

SEA PLANES  10'-100' (3-30m)  Beginner-Advanced.  Boat dive or beach dive (if you have Naval Base access) to pontoon and wing, just off Navy Base Eastern fuel pier.  Nearly whole seaplane is at 90' (27m) directly off of Western fuel pier.  Huge anemone colony full of clownfish is near pontoon.

GAB GAB I  To 100'+ (30m+)  Beginner.  Boat dive to sloping reef which descends into the deep.  Green sea turtles and colorful anemones.  Great snorkeling.  Night diving for octopus, eels, lobsters.

GAB GAB II  50'-100' (15-30m)  Advanced.  Boat dive or long swim from beach.  Atlantis Submarine tour site.  Atlantis divers have made the fish tame by feeding them for the tourists.  Caution:  Advise Atlantis Tours of intent to dive, and keep away from Sub's external thrusters.

SPONGE REEF  40'-100' (12 - 30m)  Beginner-Advanced.  Boat dive to 300'-long (90m) reef covered with sponge.  Butterflyfish and fusilers abound. Huge anemones.

HIDDEN REEF 55'-120'+ (17-36m)  Intermediate-Advanced.  Boat dive to domed reef.  Photogenic due to good visibility and rich coral and sponge life.  Several huge anemones.

FINGER REEF  To 100'+ (33m+)  Beginner-Advanced.  Boat dive or tour boat snorkeling dive to reef extending from Gab Gab at Apra. Harbor to the west.  Tour boats feed fish.  A giant 10' (3m) anemone hosts dozens of anemonefish ("clownfish").

THE SCOTIA  35'  Beginner - Advanced.  Boat dive or enter from breakwater to 1904 wreckage of a cable ship. 

THE WALL  40'-130'+ (12-40m+)  Advanced.  Boat drift dive from Orote Pt. toward Blue Hole.  Drop-off begins at 70' (21m) with sharks, rays, turtles along flats above wall, sponges on wall, corals, sea fans and sea whips.  Caution:  Deep and steep, variable currents may change direction.

BLUE HOLE  60'-130'+ (18-40m+)  Intermediate - Advanced.  Boat dive to Guam's most popular dive.  Natural chimney descends vertically thru reef at 60' (12m), and exits horizontally at 127' (38m).  Ascent on outer slope is full of tropical reef fish, lots of large triggerfish.  Friendly fish used to being fed.

THE CREVICE  60'-130'+ (18-40m+)  Advanced.  Boat dive to deep, steep canyon with big boulder at top of canyon, which was once part of cliff above.

BARRACUDA ROCK  To 60' (18m)  Beginner.  The barracuda are gone.  Small cave juts under cliff, good for snorkeling.  Snorkeled more often than scuba dived

GARDEN EEL PITS  40'-100' (12-30m)  Advanced.   Reef slopes to sand pits at 100' (30m), home of garden eels.  At 40' (12m) there is an American tank from WWII.

PITI BOMB HOLES Dive to 30' (9m)  amongst WWII bomb craters, which provide homes for fish in crystal  waters.  Largest bomb hole has Fish Eye Marine Park for

non-divers to view underwater life.

AMPHITHEATER  Dive to 60'-120' (18-36m) depth.  Intermediate to advanced diving in amphitheater-shaped dent in reef.  Leads to sand flat.  Numerous fishes.

GUN BEACH  To 120'+  (36m+)  Beginner-Advanced.  Beach dive to underwater cables leading down cut into the deep.  Large coral heads.  Popular night dive.  Great snorkeling

HOSPITAL POINT  To 120'+ (36m+)  Advanced.  Boat Dive below Tamuning cliffs on nearly vertical wall.  Pelagic species and sea fans.  Sometimes a drift dive.

CAMEL ROCK  40'-130' (12-40m)  Advanced.  Boat dive to excellent colorful corals and big anemones.  Littered with unexploded ordnance - don't touch!

ASAN CUT  To 50' (15m)  Beginner beach dive just west of park entry.  See an American LVT (Amtrak) sunk in 1944.  Coral reef wall on outside.
